About Marcus Stevens

I have lived in Mississauga, Ontario all my life and have had an interest in railways since I got my first train set at age four. Both my father and grandfather worked for Canadian Pacific at one time. I got into railroad photography in the mid 1990s after years of being inspired by the incredible railroad photos I saw in magazines such as CTC Board, Railfan & Railroad as well as Trains, just to mention a few. In 2002 I got my first article published in CTC Board and have been writing articles since, when time allows. Today my camera of choice is Canon's 70D. I have been blessed with two amazing boys that often accompany me on railfan adventures, and both love trains and planes.

KCS colours certainly do add to Ontario's autumn hues. Unfortunately the colours don’t last long here and this year Meadowvale is one of the few places I have been able to go to to take in the colours. Here a somewhat late 135 is seen slowly climbing the slight grade after stopping due to mechanical issues at Erindale. They will be forced to stop one more time at Milton before finally heading on their way.

It’s been way too long since I’ve spent time here. I remember in my early years the tracks still existed here behind the demolished station site. The old crumbling platform disappearing in the weeds. Unfortunately I’m a week or two too late for lush autumn colours but I’m not complaining. The sound of a GE and EMD tackling the Niagara Escarpment is music to my ears. Dundas certainly has a certain charm, and always will.

Unfortunately not many opportunities this year to take in some decent autumn colours. This spot in Meadowvale usually doesn’t disappoint, unfortunately the colours were all on the north side as CP 137 approached on the south, so had to make the most of what I could. Dual KCS units helped to make the things a little more colourful.

DPU alright! Well, not really, LOL. CN 568 rearranged its power at St. Mary’s today so the when it dropped all of its cars at Kelly’s other then a lone hopper they could avoid running around the rest of the train. Here the westbound trip is just south of St. Mary’s.

Props certainly help to make the scene sometimes. I’ve always loved all the old factories in Hespeler, even if the majority have been repurposed. My hopes today were simply to find BNSF 2968 and grab a few photos, especially as I’m not sure how long the BNSF Geeps will be sticking around. After no luck finding it in Guelph I decided to check the Fergus spur. As luck would have it they were finishing up at the chemical facility south of Guelph and had lumber loads for Preston in tow. Great lighting made for a nice slow chase and some decent shots. Here solo BNSF GP39V 2968 passes Four Fathers Brewing company as they enter Hespeler with three cars in tow.

A diamond in the rough. Pristine looking BNSF GP39V 2968 certainly doesn’t show its age with a nice coat of BNSF paint. Original built as a GP35 for the GM&O back in the 1960, complete with second hand Alco trucks. When BN approached VMV years ago for an option for secondhand four axle units, rebuilding old GP30’s and GP35’s became the reality, especially considering the number of hulks VMV could get its hands on. The GP35 was well known for maxing out its prime mover and often damaging its electrical system in the process, often sidling the model with electrical fires, which made them candidates for early retirement. Thankfully EMD later came out with the dash-2 electrical system, which helped eliminated a lot of headaches. Today CN is still short of four axle power and has been turning to BNSF to fill the void. I was shocked to see this nice clean unit working Kitchener yard Monday. Unfortunately the stalled 533 Sunday and derailed 540 Monday killed any chance of getting a 568 this day.

Slugless, it almost seems GEXR’s slugs spend more time out of service, then in. Maybe that’s the reason the other GW railways don’t mind sharing them. Over the years the GEXR has had several slug sets assigned to is operations in Southern Ontario. Sets 3800/800 and 3804/804 are currently assigned the the Guelph Junction operations although a few weeks ago 3800 was mated to 804. This week visit found 804 missing and 3800 running north long hood forward. A decent catch considering most crew probably prefer running short hood forward. This view visibly shows the extra cables added to the mother unit in order to power the slug. Here train 583 heads north just south of Corwhin after clearing out all the cars stored in the siding at Moffat.

Field of dreams. I have to admit I’d have a problem staying focused playing soccer here, LOL. Years ago not just CN, but NS and its predecessors plied these rails. I’ve shot a few trains on this bridge over the years but this is the first time I have caught Gio Rail here. It’s unfortunately the Ford plant west of here is long gone as it provided several daily opportunities to photograph trains here. Today most trains caught on the bridge are simply using it for head room while they work the small CN yard to the east. Here LDS leased GP38 2003 and GP9U 1597 work their GIO Rail train of solid tank cars before lifting 3 cars and heading back east.

Deep in Amish country basic black paint just seems to set the tone as borrowed LDS GP38 2003 and GP9U 1597 haul a decent size cut of tank cars westward near Orwell. The old telephone pole date back to when this line was a mainline connecting St. Thomas to the Niagara region, hosting not just CN train but those of NS and its predecessors. Sadly today most of the line is gone, and what remains is in need of serious upgrades that may never come. Much of GIO Rails trip requires constantly watching for defective or non operating crossings. But it appears business is gradually picking up. It’s unfortunate the traffic and elevators in Courtland are gone today leaving what remains of the line east of Tilsonburg quiet and overgrown. While GP38 2003 looks like a standard GP38 it is a little unique as it was one of a small group of GP38’s built for Penn Central with dual control stands. This upgrade includes an extended front window arrangement.

Meet at Moffat, it seems the GEXR Guelph Junction Railway daily schedule lately is calling for the second job to run a bit later, lately often having the two jobs meeting at Guelph Junction or on the siding at Moffat. This day the second job had a lift to do while the first job had a set off, so the meet worked well finding the conductor of the second job performing all the switching help for both trains before heading north. It was also nice catching one of the slugs active again after being sidelined for a bit.

Former DT&I 417, repainted into CN/GTW 6417 still shows the crude plate job on its nose used to cover its former bell location from when it was built. Today the veteran GP40 works for RJ Corman, but back in 1997 it still plied CN rails as seen here heading eastbound under some not so great back lit conditions at Copetown West.

Hearing 236 has a pair of SD60’s was enough to put some effort in to catch it somewhere under decent light. Of course plans typically don’t work out, especially chasing CPKC lately. The sun angle away perfect at Hornby so we set off to catch it there. An hour later it was stopped at Erindale with its trailing GP38 not loading. We decided to head towards the train figuring the light would drop before the train actually arrived. By the time we neared Meadowvale 236 was reported on the move again so we had to quickly find a location. Minutes later 236 was caught struggling up the slight grade at Meadowvale. After 3/4 of the train passed the engineer flicked the switch to turn on the sanders only to find out he accidentally dropped all the air in the tail end of the train. Stuck on the grade they were dead in the water with the second unit now failing. The train would spend the next several hours waiting for help. I’m sure the crew won’t forget this trip.

Possibly a work train. It was pretty quiet this day at Paris. I always had a love for the M420, unfortunately becoming a serious railfan in the mid 90’s meant I almost completely missed out on the MLW era. Thankfully I kept myself busy those first few years hunting down what I could find. It was also nice having a bunch of new shortlines in Ontario stocking their rosters with hand me down MLW’s and old EMD’s. Sadly today much of the older power has been replaced by second generation power, so I’m glad I took the shots I did.

Back when it seemed GP40’s ruled the rails. Back in the mid CN and CP we’re both dealing with motive power shortages. Often leading and borrowing foreign units. Along with a group of NS C30-7’s, CN also borrowed a group of Conrail SD45-2. There was no mistaking the units considering they all had oversized fuel tanks. I believe some are still roaming NS rails today. Here a short eastbound with CN GP40-2W 9661 and borrowed Conrail SD45-2 6661 are heading towards Paris West after crossing the Nith River well in the distance. There is a bit of a clash of the seasons going on with snow and left over fall colours.

A long time favourite railfan town for me, Paris is on the top of my list of places I wish I could have seen in its prime railroad days. There was once several railroads that ran through town with CN also running two branchlines. One to Stratford and the other the Brantford by-pass. The years have claimed all the lines other then CN’s mainline. Sadly the beautiful station here was razed years ago as well. CN cowl units were definitely a highlight for me and are dearly missed in these GEVO days. I am standing just east of the onetime junction, near the station site as an eastbound, possibly 434 or 410 leans into the curve under dying light with several units now long off the roster. Fond memories of a spot well grown it today.

One of the most impressive pieces of machinery I found on my western trip of 2001 was this freshly painted Ohio crane CP had stationed in Revelstoke. A very interesting town as far as the railway goes and the scenery certainly adds to any photos.

There has been a decent variety of SD70ACU’s around lately meaning some trains are a bit more worthy of going out for. Hearing this train was just clear of Guelph Junction pushed me to make a quick, extended coffee run before having to head back home. Thankfully the sun in the summer takes a bit longer here to cross the tracks near Streetsville yard. We almost got blocked out by the tie train, which cleared a couple minutes earlier adding a clean CP van to the shot as CP 134 entered the scene with military 7022, KCS and CP ex SOO SD60 6255 in the mix.

Thanks to the OSR I quickly grew a big fascination to the MLW RS23 model. For a period of time they were regulars on the job to Guelph. Typically in the form of pairs or a trio. The sound was great either way. Here a trio of RS23’s also known as “rockets” by some, are seen working the Owen’s Corning spur with a lone covered hopper. The OSR truck placed itself nicely in the image as their waited to test the crossing signals.

I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen the sidings in Milton this full. It’s a shame the old station and freight house here didn’t survive but at least the tracks for the most part remain other then the ones that once served a packaging company and cement company. Both demolished years ago. The sight of a faded SD40 is a long missed image here and very nice to finally take in again. Here 5743 and 2283 have finished backing east from the junction having put their train away. On the south side of the main the tie train is also tied down. Not bad, two CP vans in Milton on the same day too.

Ive always had a fascination with this pair of locomotives. Back in the early 2000’s I remember picking up an issue of CTC Board magazine with a two page spread at the back dedicated to these two units when they were in full SOO Line paint. I never could have imagined back then that these two units would end up so close to home. After their arrival I devoted a lot of time chasing down the SOO sister 7’s. From Clarkson to Guelph Junction and later Salford. I miss seeing this pair out on the road as they typically these days call the shop at Salford home and only see action as backup power when other chop nose units are not available. This day the sisters were out on a run to the potash facility in Putnum. Here they are seen on their return trip to Ingersol where they will collect the rest of their train and head for the CP interchange at Woodstock.
